Patterns

Forms have a critical purpose in all traditional martial arts styles; through repetition we develop reflex, so we practice blocks and punches each day in class to perfect the techniques themselves as reflex. The forms promote dynamic development of fighting reflexes: they put the single techniques together into choreographed action. Even Bruce Lee, who once said that practice in forms was a waste of time, developed as the exceptional martial artist he was through traditional forms.

Perfection of technique has other benefits in addition to self-defense: martial arts develop a wide variety of reflexes, which in turn develops focus and concentration, not to mention the ability to respond in extreme circumstances. For example, a single self-defense class might teach how to strike an attacker, but it can't teach focus under pressure or how to make sure that a strike goes exactly where it was intended. That's what regular martial arts practice is for. And for those who just want exercise, the forms alone provide a solid, whole-body workout.
